How Gold ETFs are taxed ? Sriram, 07 Nov 2012

I invested in Gold Etfs last month. I wanted to know that how Gold ETFs are taxed in India? Also let me know that how much tax to be paid on capital gains made in Gold ETFs?

Fintotal Answer

Gold ETFs are treated as non-equity mutual funds for taxation. This means short term capital gains are taxed at marginal rate (rate of your tax slab) and long term capital gains are taxed at 10% with indexation or 20% without indexation, whichever is lesser. No wealth tax applies. The good thing about gold ETFs is holding and selling them after 1 year makes it long term capital gains as against 3 years in gold coins or bars.
