Are these funds pure Large Cap or Large and Mid Cap? Arun, 10 Mar 2014

Dear Sir, BSLI Front Line Equity Fund UTI Opportunities Fund HDFC Equity Fund Are these fund pure Large Cap or Large and Mid Cap? The reason why I ask is valueresearchonline.com website says these are Large and MidCap Funds but moneycontrol.com says they are Large Cap funds - what is your take on this please? If I want to start SIP for my long terms goals do you think I should have 2/3 funds in my portfolio or just one of this will be enough?

Fintotal Answer

There is categorization designed by each of them. For VRO a fund is said to be a Large-cap when more than 80 per cent of assets are in large-cap companies over the last three years; and a fund is said to be a Large & Mid-Cap when only 60 to 80 per cent of assets are in large-cap companies over the last three years.  This statistics might be different for moneycontrol and that is the reason they name the category differently. It won't make any significant difference. For your long term goals one well performing equity diversified fund would be enough. Two –three funds would be a repetition of the stocks since mutual fund itself is a diversified product. Pick one fund from our recommended list and do monthly SIP in it. Go for growth option and direct plan.
